Tenchi Muyo the movie - 天地無用! IN LOVE Blu-ray Disc Report

 

So I finally got a PowerDVD/TotalMedia Theatre compatible video card, now I can watch and capture images including title/pop-up menus. This one would be the first of a series of anime Blu-ray Disc reports. Note that this is merely an incomplete report, not a full detailed review since I don’t have the right mood to sit through this movie right now.

 

 

All the following captures are done in TotalMedia Theatre 3 (TMT3) with hardware acceleration off. For review purpose, the images are scaled down to 775×435 (the max width this blog allows) in PNG format, the original format is 1920×1080 in jpg (although TMT does have the option to “save as” bmp, I found that the original captures are all saved as jpg, therefore it’s really no benefit to convert jpg to bmp…) provided as rar batch for download at the end.

The opening Geneon and Rondo Robe logos are just upconverts.

 

 

Bitrates are high as these are the Japanese releases.

 

 

First impression about the image quality is actually exceeding my expectation. Although there are flaws in presentation, I’m happy the overall quality. The footage seems to be fairly DNR’ed. The audio has DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD, they aren’t mixed extremely loud with huge dynamic range.

 

 

The disc is BDMV only, both title menu and pop-up menu are available. The pop-up menu simulates a camera, overall operation is smooth and intuitive.

 

 

The menu texts use somewhat small font that it’s ok to view in short distance, but if you want to sit a few feet away, I doubt you’ll be able to clearly see them… But it’s quite typical for Japanese releases.

 

 

 

Both the chapters menu and setting menu provide real-time tracking function.

Subtitle options are off, English subtitle for Japanese audio, Japanese subtitle for English dub, English subtitle (dubtitle) for English dub. The above is the English subtitle for Japanese audio. So this disc is so-called import friendly disc… Not sure if the translations are improved or not, but on the original releases, the English translations are very lousy with inaccurate meanings.

Extras are just one news (announcement) and one trailer. Both of them aren’t remastered, but still shown in HD resolution…

 

The video suffers from dot crawl…

A return button is provided, but it routes back to title menu instead of resuming the movie…

 

The title menu shown above is just a static piece of image, the overlay menu is the same as the pop-up menu which is pretty typical for any Blu-ray Disc.
