ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版: 序 REBUILD OF EVANGELION 1.11 Blu-ray Disc report

 

So my second report is Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone Blu-ray. I’m trying my best to compare this to the older 1.01 DVD. All the menu captures from 1.11 Blu-ray are done in TMT3, resized to 755×435 resolution; while all the captures from 1.01 DVD are done in KMPlayer, resized to 720×404. So it should be quite easy to see the difference since Blu-ray’s image sizes are bigger.

Above image is from BDMV\META folder, this 640×360 image will show up as a disc icon in PS3. So far PS3 is the only Blu-ray player that support this META image last time I checked, not sure about now though.

 

This is a BD-J title, which means no resume if you stop the disc. The use of BD-J brings better button animation, and extra feature tracking function (this title has tons of short videos in the extra section).

 

Bitrate is high as usual.

 

 

Not on this frame…

 

 

So what’s the difference between 1.11 and the older 1.01 only available on DVD?

 

 

1.11 (top picture) being from a digital source looks extremely clean and bright. 1.01 (bottom picture) being from film looks somewhat grainy and darker. Also 1.11 expands the framing a little more. I actually preferred the grainy darker 1.01 version, especially on the action sequences, it brings more impact and being more dramatic.

 

 

About 1.11’s video quality, this one is the best I’ve ever seen so far in the domain of digital animation. The resolutions are really there unlike some other titles rendered in 1080p. Also the title doesn’t suffer from color banding which is very very common from digital animation. Not sure how much SONY’s SBMV (Super Bit Mapping for Video) encoding technology helped it, I would guess the dudes from GAINAX really know how to do digital animation. The audio quality is also very nice, I listened to it in DTS-ES core from the DTS-HD MA 6.1 track and already quite satisfied with it. The bass on this title is not shy unlike most Japanese releases.

 

 

 

Being a BD-J title, the compatibility is very important. This disc works well in PowerDVD 8; but in TMT3, the chapter function does not work.

 

There are tons of extra videos in the SPECIAL section, but pretty much all are all very similar. The longest feature is Rebuild of EVANGELION: 1.01 in the right-most column. This feature (pic below) being over 15 minutes show how the movie was animated accompanied by two sound tracks, one being composed by Shiro SAGISU, one being composed by Joseph-Maurice Ravel, you can switch between the two tracks.

 

Another feature is the script:

You can jump from the scenes to the corresponding script, but once you are in the script, you cannot go back to the movie… There are a total of 147 pages.

 

The 1.01 DVD also has this feature.

But being DVD’s low resolution, fewer words can be put on the screen. There are 272 pages despite 1.11 has more footage and longer than 1.01.

The disc has both Dolby TrueHD 6.1 and DTS-HD MA 6.1, the default on my players is DTS-HD MA 6.1, not sure why, usually to prevent damage to equipment without DTS encoders, authoring house prefer to put Dolby as default since every player on the market has built-in decoder.

 

A title menu is provided also, the overlay menu is the same as the pop-up menu. It is actually quite similar to the older 1.01 DVD seen below:

 

 

One of the use of BD-J is tracking which videos have been played as I mentioned above. I think it would be doable in DVD and BDMV mode, but it would be extremely tedious to do.
